NEW ROADS, La. –New Roads Mayor Robert Myer held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 1, along with special guest speaker retired Lt. General Russell L. Honore, to officially open the New Roads Information Center.
The New Roads Information Center is located in the Heritage Building, located at 116 West Main Street, across the street from City Hall and next to Mama’s Kitchen.
The center will be open weekly, Monday-Friday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and manned with a city worker to provide visitors with information on activities, history and culture of the city and surrounding area. The center will include brochures, maps and books written by local authors and about the area, including the classic works of literary author Ernest Gaines and a recent release by Pointe Coupee Parish native Lt. Gen. Honore.
Honore served as the 33rdcommanding general of the U.S. First Amy at Fort Gillem, Georgia. He is best known for serving as commander of Joint Task Force Katrina, responsible for coordinating military relief efforts across the Gulf Coast.
